North Orange County ROP students and staff were well represented at the annual Career Technical Education Conference. The following Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway students at Brea Olinda High School were recognized at the conference for their entries in the CTE Conference Program Cover Contest: 2nd Place - Emily Diplock, 11th grade 3rd Place - Nicole Stefun, 12th grade Honorable Mention - Brittany Wong, 12th grade Instructors Tom Metcalf, Reid Petersen and Administrator Gail Kairis also hosted breakout session presentations. Orange County Department of Education held its annual OC Pathways Showcase at Edwards Lifesciences on Nov. 27. The theme was “Our Humanity, Our Technology, Our Future,” and featured student work across 15 career technical education industry sectors. Guests from local businesses, schools, colleges were in attendance. Edwards Lifesciences Vice President of Advanced Technology Jinny Lee and Executive Director of Global Corporate Giving Amanda Fowler hosted a panel to discuss patient-focused medical innovations with Biotechnology Pathway students Amanda Gao and Shawn Patel, and answered career-related questions from students.

Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway students at El Camino Real High School participated in the 10th Annual Exposed: Out of Focus art contest hosted by the Yorba Linda Public Library. A total of 13 students were selected to have work featured in the Graphic Design section of the exhibit at the Richard Nixon Library. Biotechnology Pathway student Shawn Patel has been featured by Apple in their "Meet The Developer" article series. Shawn is a senior at Oxford Academy and has developed 7 apps (3 on the Apple App Store, 1 on Google Assistant Actions, and 3 yet to be published), including the app used by Oxford Academy HOSA. Congratulations, Shawn!

Patient Care Pathway instructor Ken McCall was featured by Spectrum News 1 for his role in saving the life of Brea Olinda High School Wrestling Coach Brian Schlueter. "Schlueter may not have survived if it wasn't for the high school's Medical Careers class, where students like Windes and Winkler learned skills like CPR and how to use the automated external defibillator." Performing Arts Pathway students at Western High School presented The 4th Annual Nutcracker on Dec. 6 & 7. The classic ballet was presented with a twist, using characters from Nintendo's Mario Bros. game series. Costumes, set design, script writing, and marketing were done by students across all of instructor Maile Leonard's classes.

Residential & Commercial Construction Pathway students at Anaheim High School had a chance to learn more about different careers within the construction industry through a visit from Brookfield Residential, Crownco Inc., and KB Home. The company representatives shared their day-to-day duties, job application and interview advice, and future resources for students. Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope your winter break was restful and you're ready to start the second half of the school year. I'd like to introduce you to our three newest Board members: Al Jabbar (Anaheim Union High School District), Gail Lyons (Brea Olinda Unified School District), and Andrew Montoya (Fullerton Joint Union High School District).
