MPower Africa
Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway instructor Reid Petersen was approached by MPower Africa, a humanitarian company based in Mozambique, AF, to create a logo for their company. Mr. Petersen thought, why not give this job to his students- he did and created an authentic learning experience in his classroom by having the students compete for the job. Naomi Moreno created the winning design, and got the “job”. Her logo is now featured on the product tags and company website. MPower Africa creates jobs for women in Mozambique in order to encourage independence and provide financial stability. Each product is handmade by women. 50% of profits are used to train more women in the community. Way to go Naomi, your design is global!
Apple Worldwide Developers Conference
Biotechnology Pathway student Shawn Patel was awarded the WWDC Scholarship by Apple. The award included a trip to San Jose, CA to attend the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference on June 4 - 8. Shawn met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and discussed his app, UV Safe. Thank you Apple for providing this opportunity to students!
Student Handbook Competition
North Orange County ROP held its annual Student Handbook Cover Contest. Over 150 entries were submitted from Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway students across our five partner districts. The winner, Brittany Wong, was surprised with the good news and a check for $250 from the Career Education Foundation on May 21. Brittany is a senior at Brea Olinda High School in the Visual Communications class taught by instructor Franco Ciccarello. Her design will be featured on the cover of the 2018-2019 Student Handbook, which is distributed to over 16,000 students and parents, and featured on www.nocrop.org. Congratulations, Brittany!
NatCar Competition
Engineering Design Pathway student Victoria Shin participated in the annual NatCar competition at UC Davis on May 5. The objective of the competition is to create an autonomous racecar that can navigate a preset course in the shortest time possible. The course is marked by 1-inch-wide white tape. The competition hosted over 25 teams from many universities across the west coast. Victoria's team placed first in the junior division. Pioneers of Dance: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
Performing Arts Pathway students at Western High School presented Pioneers of Dance: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow on May 3 and 4. The three-act show consisted of choreography inspired by influential choreographers, and concluded with pieces by graduating Western High School seniors.
Printing Industry Association, Inc. of Southern California
Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway students at Brea Olinda High School attended the annual Printing Industries of America Southern California (PIASC) Awards Banquet on May 24. Every year, PIASC’s RAISE Foundation rewards students that participate in its annual competitions by providing grants. These grants assist with the expenses incurred in their participation in the Skills USA competitions, help with continued education, and provide funding to graphic arts programs. National Honor Society for Dance Arts
Performing Arts Pathway students at Western High School were inducted the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) on May 7. This chapter of NHSDA is the first in Anaheim Union High School District. To join the organization, students at Western High School must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, accumulate a minimum of 30 points according to the NHSDA Induction Point System, and demonstrate a positive and professional approach to dance training and performance.
The 2018 Coyote Film Festival: Evoke An Emotion
Production and Managerial Arts Pathway students at Buena Park High School hosted the first Coyote Film Festival: Evoke An Emotion at The Krikorian Theatre on May 14. Short films were shown, demonstrating the progress from the students' first projects to their most recently completed films. Genres included horror, music video, blog/"a-day-in-the-life", and animations.
"Farm to Fork" - Knott's Berry Farm
ROP students at Buena Park High School took a tour of Knott's Berry Farm on May 4. Food Service and Hospitality Pathway students had a chance to visit the theme park's Central Production Kitchen while Production and Managerial Arts Pathway students documented the tour. Centralia School District Board Meeting
Education Pathway students at Kennedy and Western High Schools were honored at the Centralia District Board meeting on May 9. Superintendent Norma E. Martinez thanked the students for their volunteer work with elementary schools in the district. The work serves as part of the work-based learning component within the Education Pathway curriculum. Students gain experience working with children in preparation for jobs such as teachers, childcare workers, family service advocates, and more. Thank you Centralia School District for your support of career technical education!
Field Trip to Service Champions
Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway students at Brea Olinda High School took a field trip to Service Champions, a heating and air conditioning company, on May 10. Students were able to take a tour of the headquarters and participate in a training lesson from a Service Technician. Thank you Service Champions for providing this opportunity to our students!
Brea Chamber of Commerce
Tobias Witt; senior Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway student at Brea Olinda High School; has been awarded the Regional Occupational Program Business Vision Scholarship Award by the Brea Chamber of Commerce. The ROP Business Vision Scholarship is given annually to graduating Brea Olinda High School seniors who demonstrate the desire to further their education and have developed a plan to meet and accomplish career goals in the short and long term. The ROP Business Vision Scholarship also meets the Brea Chamber’s mission to improve the quality of the workforce for businesses in the present and future. Congratulations, Tobias!
Medical Academy at Sonora High School
Students at Sonora High School that completed the Patient Care Pathway received their Medical Academy cords and medallions during a ceremony on May 16. Completion of the pathway is a 3 - 4 year process that includes the following courses: Medical Careers, Body Systems and Disorders, Sports Medicine and Therapy, Medical Assistant, and Nursing Assistant. Next year's HOSA: Future Health Professionals officers were also announced during the ceremony.
Celebrating Student Growth Award
Software and Systems Development Pathway student David Ramirez received the Celebrating Student Growth Award at Buena Park High School. Instructor Greg Beutler nominated David for the award due to his growth and hard work from first to second semester. The award also included 2 tickets to Knott's Berry Farm. Congratulations, David!
Glenview Elementary Carnival
Education Pathway students at Esperanza High School volunteered at the Glenview Elementary Carnival on June 1. Working with Glenview's Parent-Teacher Association, students organized and manned games/activities booths at the event. Thank you Glenview Elementary for providing this opportunity to our students!

Legal Practices Pathway Guest Speakers
Employees from the Orange County Probation Department and US Border Patrol visited Legal Practices Pathway students at El Dorado High School on June 5. The guest speakers provided information on each organization's hiring process, job duties, and additional resources. Thank you OC Probation Department and US Border Patrol!
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
The Leadership Team hosted the 8th annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon Fiesta on June 15 to honor our incredible staff for an amazing school year. Festivities included a salsa contest, dessert contest, opportunity drawing giveaways, and freshly cooked tacos.
