Celebration of Success Award Ceremony

North Orange County ROP students were honored at the 45th Annual Celebration of Success Award Ceremony on April 25. Instructors and Career Guidance Specialists nominated students who demonstrated outstanding achievement in their ROP classes. These students completed an online application and a select number of finalists were interviewed by industry partners, award sponsors, and support staff at the Education Center. Out of the 16,000 students that NOCROP serves, 44 exceptional students were chosen to be honored at the ceremony. Students were given a total of $25,000 through the Career Education Foundation and each received certificates from the following legislators: Congressman Lou Correa; Senators John Moorlach, Josh Newman, and Janet Nguyen; and Assemblymembers Travis Allen, Phillip Chen, Steven Choi, Tom Daly, and Sharon Quirk-Silva. Thank you to our generous donors, ROP staff, business partners, and volunteers who make this event possible every year!

HOSA: Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference

Biotechnology and Patient Care Pathway students attended the annual HOSA: Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference in Anaheim on April 6 - 8. Students from Esperanza, Magnolia, Troy, Savanna and Sonora High Schools, Oxford Academy (junior high and high school students), Brookhurst Junior High School, high school students at Trident Education Center, and our adult programs participated in competitions that included Medical Photography, Biomedical Debate, Medical Math, Extemporaneous Health Poster, and many more. Winners who qualify will head off to Dallas, Texas for the HOSA International Leadership Conference.

Skills USA State Leadership Conference

Design, Visual, and Media Arts; Engineering Design, and Patient Care Pathway students at Anaheim, Brea Olinda, and Sunny Hills High Schools attended the annual Skills USA State Leadership conference in Ontario, CA on April 20 - 22. Students participated in competitions including Additive Manufacturing, Robotics: Urban Search and Rescue, T-Shirt Design, Dental Assisting, and more. Winners who qualify will travel to Horseshoe, Indiana for the 54th Annual National Leadership and Skill Conference.

WE Day

ROP students and staff attended WE Day Los Angeles at The Forum on April 19. Students earned their tickets to the event through service learning opportunities and community involvement. The event includes motivational speakers, performances by Dierks Bentley and Cyndi Lauper, and appearances by Selena Gomez, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, and many more. Thank you to WE for providing this opportunity to our students and their continued partnership!

Anatomage Table at Esperanza High School

Patient Care Pathway students at Esperanza High School can now examine and operate on a 3D cadaver through an anatomage table. EHS is the first high school in Orange County and the second in the state to get the $75,000 device. Seniors Emilee Carr and Maddy Galvin presented the device to school officials and visiting students from Travis Ranch Middle School on April 24.

Cooking Up Change - Kid Healthy Competition

Food Service and Hospitality Pathway students at Anaheim, Buena Park, La Habra, and Sonora High Schools participated in the annual Cooking Up Change competition on April 26. Each student team was challenged to create a new lunch menu following a strict set of criteria including: utilizing ingredients commonly found in a school cafeteria, a budget of $1.25 per serving, all while making it creative, great tasting, and nutritious.

La Habra High School/ROP alumni and national winners of last year's Cooking Up Change also paid a visit to watch the competition and provide words of wisdom to participants.

Congratulations to instructor Lisa Driggers and her students at Anaheim High School, the dishes from the menu for the competition will be placed on the 2018 - 2019 AUHSD cafeteria menu rotation!

Building Industry Association of Southern California Design/Build Competition

Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway students at Brea Olinda, Katella, La Habra, Savanna, Valencia, and Western High Schools competed in the 28th Annual Building Industry Association of Southern California Design/Build Competition on April 28 - 29. Twelve teams of students were given a two-day project that mimics the real-world pressures of inspections and deadlines while enforcing the values of safety, teamwork, and craftsmanship. Officials from national construction companies inspected the floor plans and structure designs.

Anaheim Union High School District Color & Light Art Competition

Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway students at Magnolia High School participated in the Color and Light: 18th Annual Student Art and Photography Exhibition. Over 250 junior high school and senior high school artists from Anaheim Union High School District submitted artwork, including photography, drawing, painting, and 3-D design pieces, which were judged by a panel of art professionals. Sixty-six awards in 25 categories were presented to students.

FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program

Jessica Costescu, Legal Practices Pathway student at Cypress High School, has been accepted to the FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program. The 8-day program is held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and features classroom study, physical challenges, guest lectures, and leadership development. Only 60 applicants worldwide are accepted each year to attend this program after an extensive process with an initial application followed by an essay on leadership and a rigorous interview process. Jessica was honored at the Cypress City Council meeting on April 9.

The Ebell of Los Angeles Scholarship Program

Victor Flores, a Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway student at Magnolia High School was awarded The Ebell/Flint Scholarship for his photography work. The Ebell of Los Angeles is an educational and philanthropic organization founded by women in 1894. The motto of the Ebell “I Will Find a Way or Make One - I Serve” aligns with its core mission to encourage the educational, cultural and social growth of the diverse Los Angeles community.

SHARP International West Coast Regional Championships

Performing Arts Pathway students at Western High School participated in the SHARP International West Coast Regional Championships dance competition on April 15 at Six Flags Magic Mountain. They received 1st Place in the following categories: Character Routine, Jazz, Lyrical, Kickline, Hip-Hop, Dance, and Most Spirited.

STEM Premier Top 100

Jake Chao, Biotechnology Pathway student at Oxford Academy, was ranked in the 2018 STEM Premier Top 100. The list identifies the top academic and technical high school students on STEM Premier and recognizes their accomplishments, talents, and efforts. 170,000+ STEM Premier students from over 19,000 different high schools competed for a spot in the STEM Premier Top 100.
