Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 17 - Every Student Succeeding Breakfast Celebration

The Association of California School Administrators honored Patient Care Pathway student Saray Frutos at the annual Every Student Succeeding Breakfast Celebration on March 9. The event recognizes students that have overcome challenges and earned success despite facing adversities. "Saray found her calling as a medical professional in the ROP Medical Assisting class at Magnolia High School. In spite of challenges with reading and writing, she helps others who may be struggling with their studies. The hands-on activities and workplace learning in the doctor’s office allow her to practice real world problem solving." - Julie Dentler (Administrator, Instructional Programs) Each honoree received Disneyland passes and STS Education provided each student a Chromebook that was personally etched with his or her name.
Chef Bruno's Hospitality Academy Graduation
Food Service and Hospitality Pathway students at Anaheim High School graduated from Chef Bruno's Hospitality Academy on March 8. Fourteen students participated in this Anaheim Innovative Mentoring Experience (AIME), presented by AUHSD and Chef Bruno Serato of The Anaheim White House. The twelve-week program trains students in all aspects of the restaurant and hotel industry including cuisine, nutrition, restaurant service, marketing, administration, and financial literacy. Each student is assessed by administrators of the program, professionals in the industry, and peer groups before graduating. The graduation celebration included a four-course meal that was prepared by the graduates for friends, family, city dignitaries, donors, and district supervisors in attendance.
Dog House Competition
The annual Brea Olinda High School Dog House Competition was on Friday, March 30. Students spent five weeks designing, building, and painting the dog houses. 339 votes were cast by both students and staff during lunch break. The winners were:

Love Placentia Award
Bertina Sung; a 9th grade Design, Visual, and Media Arts Pathway student at El Dorado High School, was selected to create the promotional material for this year's Love Placentia event. The promotional material includes designs for a poster, flyer, and postcards in English and Spanish. Instructor David Block assigned the project to his classes and over 100 designs were submitted by his students.
Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge
Systems Diagnostics, Service, and Repair Pathway students at Katella and Loara High Schools participated in The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge on March 2 - 4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Each team team was challenged to finish disassembling and reassembling a small-block Chevrolet engine in under 33 minutes. Katella High School received first place with a time of 26:43 and qualified for the 2018 Dual National Championship Playoffs.
Yorba Days Community Faire
Patient Care Pathway students at Esperanza High School participated in the Yorba Days Community Faire, an annual event that celebrates the community of Yorba Linda. Local residents were able to learn about the Patient Care Pathway courses offered at Esperanza High School while students demonstrated the skills they learn through the courses. Thank you to the Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce for providing this opportunity to our students!
Chapman University School of Pharmacy
Biotechnology Pathway students at Oxford Academy took a field trip to Chapman University School of Pharmacy on March 23. Students learned about academic and licensing requirements for pharmacists, interpreted medication orders, reviewed drug formulation, and practiced compounding medication.
Child Development Pathway at Los Alamitos High School
Did you know that our Child Development Pathway students can participate in work-based learning through preschools that are located on their high school campus? The Child Development Pathway provides real-world experiences to high school students that are interested in the teaching profession. Students enroll in a three-year pathway starting with Child Development where they study children's developmental stages from conception through early adolescence. Next, students advance to Careers With Children, a two-year work-based course where they acquire hours working with children enrolled in a state-licensed preschool under the direction and supervision of a qualified, certificated preschool instructor. All courses are UC/CSU approved for "g" elective credit and articulate with local community colleges. Students who complete the pathway qualify to take the State Instructional Aide exam that leads to certification.

Hatch Culinary Lab
Food Service and Hospitality Pathway students in the Anaheim Union High School District are participating in the Hatch Culinary Lab spring program. Thank you to Anaheim's Innovative Mentorship Experience (AIME) program, the OC Fair & Events Center, and CulinaryLab Contemporary Cooking School for providing this opportunity to our students! Students from ROP classes at Savanna and Western High Schools travel to the OC Fairgrounds and learn professional-level cooking skills in a commercial kitchen. Each student received a chef's coat embroidered with their name.
Educators Rising California State Competition
Education Pathway students at Esperanza High School participated in the 2018 Educators Rising California State Competition. The winners were announced at the Tomorrow's Teachers Conference at Santiago Canyon Community College on March 9. The following students received these awards: Creative Lecture: 2nd Place - Paige Lopez The Creative Lecture Competition offers ambitious, fearless, bold-thinking students a platform for sharing their ideas in a format that has been embraced by intellectual society, a student TED Talk. The topic for the 2018 Creative Lecture Competition was equity. STEM Lesson Plan and Delivery: 2nd Place - “The Shocking World of Static Electricity” by Bryn Harper This competition challenges young educators to plan and deliver a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) lesson of their choosing to an actual classroom of students. Students had to submit a written lesson plan, a short video of their classroom delivery and a reflection piece on what was learned from the experience that will help him/her become a better teacher.
Associated Builders and Contractors of Southern California
Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway students at La Habra High School visited the Associated Builders and Contractors of Southern California (ABC SoCal) headquarters and attended a teaching demonstration on electrical systems. Students were taught electrical hands on applications by third and fourth year ABC SoCal students. Thank you to ABC SoCal for providing this opportunity to our students!
Clark Commons
Food Service and Hospitality Pathway students and instructor Wendy Gonzales at Buena Park High School provided residents at Clark Commons with a nutrition presentation and cooking demonstration. Clark Commons is an affordable housing apartment community for families in Buena Park. Residents are provided with onsite services that include a focus on education and healthy lifestyles.
Greenhouse at Magnolia High School
The Residential and Commercial Construction Pathway students at Magnolia High School created a greenhouse in collaboration with the MHS Gardening Club. The greenhouse uses aquaponic technology, which combines the living environment of aquatic wildlife with plants that are grown directly in water and without soil. DonorsChoose.org
Food Service and Hospitality Pathway instructor Lisa Driggers received donations of two new General Electric stovetops and a printer for her classroom at Anaheim High School from DonorsChoose.org and Ripple as part of the #BestSchoolDay event. DonorsChoose.org connects teachers in high-need communities with donors who want to help. Due to Ripple's $29 million dollar donation on March 27, all 35,000 projects on the website were fully funded.
